If you are contemplating going away to college, one of your primary concerns
will be transportation. If you don’t have a car right now, you may decide
literally any car is better than none at all. There are all sorts of issues when
considering the decision of taking a car to school.
If you won’t have a car,
don’t sweat it. There are many other ways of getting around. Of the campuses I
questioned, many allow inline skates and bicycles on campus sidewalks as a means
of getting to class. Most main campus buildings are equipped with bike racks
within close proximity for riders to lock up their bikes. Some offer bike paths
for riders (so no pedestrians are run over). A few campuses allow skateboards as
well. Check with your campus for options. And remember, your feet will get a lot
of use even if you are driving.

Topics covered:
- The
car approach (budgeting, finding a good mechanic, car necessities, lending
vehicles)
- The
non-car approach (The four B’s: bikes, boards, blades, bus)
- Ride
boards
"If you have a car, determine from the start if you will use it to
give rides. Talk with your parents to find out a reasonable price your friends
should contribute for gas. If you do not have a car, be considerate enough to
offer to help with the gas money without being asked.” - Kellie,
